General Information IBM's SPSS statistics software integrates and analyzes marketing, customer, and operational data in key vertical markets. UMN's SPSS license is only intended for Teaching, Learning & Research use. OIT's license expires yearly on 12/31.
IF you require SPSS for Administrative use*, please send an email to and we will put you in touch with our vendor rep to discuss licensing options. Admin use of the SPSS software through our contract could result in fines &/or loss of the SPSS license site-wide. *Administrative use as an example would be students using the school's real data to find patterns and warning signs of why students might be leaving school before graduation (maybe lack of extra-curricular, or too much).
The moment an admissions or student retention office uses this data, it becomes administrative. As long as the results are only for the students or faculty to understand what is possible to predict, it is academic. If any action is taken on the results, it becomes administrative. Similarly, if an instructor provides results of a student satisfaction survey so their current students can analyze, that is not administrative, but if they use those results to change their approach in the classroom, that is now administrative.
